RetireCalc is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities. We continually work to improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards to our website.
Our Commitment to WCAG
We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines define how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.
Our website is designed, developed, and tested with accessibility as a core requirement, not an afterthought.
Accessibility Features
RetireCalc incorporates the following accessibility features:
- Semantic HTML Structure: Proper use of headings (h1-h3), landmarks (nav, main, section, footer), and ARIA roles to support screen readers and assistive technologies
- Keyboard Navigation: All interactive elements (calculator inputs, buttons, FAQ accordions, navigation links) are fully operable using keyboard controls alone
- Focus Indicators: Visible focus styles on all interactive elements for users navigating by keyboard
- Color Contrast: Text and background color combinations meet WCAG AA contrast ratio requirements
- Screen Reader Compatibility: ARIA attributes on dynamic elements (FAQ accordions, calculator results, navigation toggles) ensure screen readers convey changes in content
- Responsive Design: Content is fully usable across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices at various screen sizes
- Text Scaling: All text uses relative units (rem) and scales properly when browser zoom is adjusted up to 200%
- Form Labels: All calculator input fields have explicit labels and ARIA-describedby hints for context
- Chart Fallback Content: The retirement chart canvas includes fallback text for browsers that do not support canvas elements
- Reduced Motion: Animations respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query where possible
Known Limitations
We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are actively working to address them:
- The Chart.js library-generated chart may have limited screen reader accessibility. We provide equivalent text descriptions in the surrounding content.
- Some third-party embedded content (such as CDN-loaded scripts) may not fully meet our accessibility standards.
Ongoing Efforts
Accessibility is an ongoing process. We regularly:
- Test our website with screen readers (including NVDA and VoiceOver)
- Review our color contrast ratios as we add new content
- Update our code to follow evolving accessibility best practices
- Provide accessibility training to our content and development team
Third-Party Content
Some parts of our website may rely on third-party services (such as Google Fonts, Chart.js CDN, and Google Analytics). These services may have their own accessibility characteristics that are outside our direct control. We choose providers that demonstrate a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
